A few of the students at Xavier's school for Higher Learning, were congregated in the Dining Hall. The younger students creating a ruckus, the elder students getting frustrated.
Scott Summers, one of the older residents of the school, walked through the door, eyebrows lowered into a frown behind his red sunglasses. He sighed and looked around. How could a few kids make THIS much noise? As he turned to walk away, out of the corner of his eye he saw the new girl... What was her name again? Annie? Alexa? Alice, that was it.
He watched her for a minute, sitting in the corner on her own, none of the other students paying any attention to her. No one even noticing she was there.
Alice glanced up from the floor for a second, saw Scott walking over to her, and bowed her head again quickly. In the week she had been here, he was the only person to speak to her, and that was only because her father, Charles Xavier himself, had asked for someone to check up on her.
Raising herself from the sofa, she heard Scott's voice.
"Going somewhere?" He asked, before sitting down next to her, Alice flopped back down into the old sofa, "Not very sociable are you?" He noted with a smile, gazing out the window.
Alice looked at him in amazement. He didn't even know her, had no idea what she had been through, running away at the age of 12 from the home she shared with her mother, Xavier had left before Alice was born, because she was 'gifted'. Being hunted down from town to town, city to city, for the past 5 years, going into hiding for the past 2. That was the life she had known, and now, at 17, Alice was thrown into a life full of mutants, where she was accepted, but no one accepted her, and that was how she liked life.
"Excuse me?" She questioned him, getting a bit annoyed. "Not very sociable?"
He turned to look at her again. Mumbling a bit now, "Well, I mean, I was just saying, y'know, it's been a week now, and you've not spoken to anyone, not even approached them." He waved his right arm toward the mass of screaming kids. "They're not all that bad y'know. I mean..." He grimaced as a particularly high pitched scream sounded. "Noisy yes, but they're OK really."
Alice shuffled back into the sofa, pressing herself as far back as she could, and bought her knees up to her chest, hugging them tight.
"I don't want to know." She looked at Scott, her eyes filling with tears. "People hurt you in the worst way, I have learned that by now. I don't want any friends, I just want a safe place to live." She looked away again, staring at the ground. "I just want to be left alone." A single tear fell to the floor.
Scott hesitated for a second, not sure what he should say, then sighed, shook his head and headed for the door, turning back in the doorway, looking at the poor lost girl sitting in the corner, crying.
From across the room, Piotr Rasputin was watching Alice and Scott. Piotr was big for a 19 year old. Nearly 6"6', he towered above everyone else at the mansion. He'd seen this girl around, but hadn't really noticed her. That was the problem with Alice, everyone saw her every day, but no one noticed her.
Getting up, he walked over to the sofa, Alice looked at him, wiping her eyes.
"What do you want?" She asked him quietly, not sure she wanted any sympathy.
Smiling, he held out his hand. "I'm Piotr, mind if I sit down?"
Ignoring his hand, Alice shrugged. "S'pose not." She mumbled. "Not mine is it."
Piotr rolled his eyes, but kept the smile and sat down next to the pink haired girl.
20 minutes later, a small figure walked into the room, her name was Katherine Pryde, or Kitty for short, holding something in her left hand. Walking to the middle of the room, she raised her left hand, revealing a bottle.
"Anyone care for a game?" She addressed the room, commanding there total attention.
There was a fuss as everyone scrambled to find their places. Piotr looked at Alice, grinning from ear to ear.
"Fancy it?"
He didn't wait for her to answer as he raced from the sofa, sitting himself down in an available space in the circle. Looking around her, Alice took in the faces of those around her. A whole mix of age, race, gender, the works, and she wondered what everyone's 'gifts' were.
Letting her eyes wonder over everyone, her gaze rested on Piotr. There was something about him, and she couldn't work out what, that was drawing her to him. While Alice was struggling to figure it out, Piotr looked straight at her. Shocked and embarrassed, she glanced away quickly. Thinking for a second she ran from the room.
Alice's pace didn't slow down till she got back to her room on the other side of the mansion. As she paused to open the door, there were noises coming from down the hallway behind her. Footsteps, getting louder. As Alice opened the door, a hand rested on her shoulder.
"What's wrong? Why'd you run?"
Alice heart raced as she put a face to the voice, and as she slowly turned, her head was spinning, so many thoughts going through her mind, but what to tell him? She closed her eyes, stopped all thoughts and prayed that what was about to come out of her mouth made sence and wasn't just aload of gibberish.
She never got the chance to find out what her sentence would be, as Piotr grabber her and kissed her passionately, before pulling away and nodding toward her room.
"Do you mind?" He asked, before taking one last look around, making sure no one was looking, and following her inside.
6 am next morning, Piotr snuck out of Alice's room, careful not to wake her as he got dressed and left. It was a safe journey back to his own room on the other side of the mansion, it was too early for anyone else to be up yet, so he wouldn't be seen. Making it back to his room, he heard a noise. Spinning round, there was Kitty standing behind him.
"You're up early?" She questioned him. "Going somewhere?"
Piotr knew by now from the tone in his girlfriends voice, he had better think of something fast.
"Err yeah." He coughed. "Such a nice day, thought I'd go for a run around the grounds before breakfast." He blurted out, stretching his arms above his head for added effect, then walking off, leaving a bewildered Kitty to ponder what just happened.
Eyes narrowing, she stormed off down the hall, in search of Alice's room, anger building up inside her. He followed her out last night, and Kitty was about to find out what happened, whether Alice wanted to tell her or not...
