Breathing in the bitterly cold air, Anna-Marie pauses in front of the tavern. She can hear cheering and laughter coming from inside. A wave of fear washes over her, what is she doing? She is only 17 and here she is, hundreds of miles from home. Wishing she could turn back, she directs her gaze to the snowy ground at her feet. What is wrong with her? Her thoughts go back to that day.

Anna-Marie was sitting on her bed, her boyfriend by her side, they were laughing and joking. Talking about their dreams, where they wanted to be in, say, 5... maybe 10 years time. Places they wanted to go, things they wanted to see. She had kissed him. That’s all it was, a simple, innocent kiss. That’s where it all went wrong. She could feel him getting weaker. Anna-Marie didn’t know how she did it, but she knew then and there it was her fault. He lay there, convulsing, skin pale. When her parents came to see what she was screaming about, Anna-Marie knew she didn’t belong there anymore. That night, she packed a bag and left, looking back only once, at the end of the drive, to bid her parents a silent farewell, and then she walked off into the night.
************************************************
And now, here she was. Standing alone in a town she didn’t know. People bustle around, brushing past her in their hurry to get home. Anna-Marie flinches. She doesn’t want to hurt anyone here. The past 2 weeks had been a blur for her. Anna-Marie walks into the tavern. Finding a spot in the corner, she sits. Pulling her coat hood up over her head, she watches people. The couple arguing in the corner, the group of young lads playing pool. She must have got lost in her thoughts because the last orders bell is sounding. Anna-Marie jolts back to reality, where is the going to go now? She starts looking around her, panicked.
